A Statement Regarding WRAS 88.5 FM from College Radio Day

On Tuesday May 6th, 2014 we at College Radio Day, along with the rest of the college radio world, were saddened to hear that WRAS 88.5FM in Atlanta would no longer broadcast student created programming between the hours of 5 a.m. EST through 7 p.m. EST. The 100,000 watt student voice of Georgia State University will instead become an affiliate of Georgia Public Broadcasting during these hours. We hope that the administration of Georgia State University will meet with the student staff of WRAS and allow them to voice their concerns about these developments.

WRAS 88.5FM has a special place in the history of college radio. First going on the air in 1971, WRAS holds one of the strongest broadcasting signals for a college radio station in the country. It has been nominated and won national awards at the annual CMJ convention held in New York City, and has won local awards such as the “Best of Atlanta” award in 2012.

College Radio Day is a celebration of the unique medium of college radio. College radio introduces new and unsigned music to its diverse audiences, serves its local communities by providing independently produced programming that you cannot hear anywhere else, and gives voice to student broadcasters who develop important communication skills and connect with listeners in a way only college radio can. If students are not provided access to these types of facilities, their educational experience can and will suffer because of it.

We stand with the student broadcasters of WRAS who want to continue creating programming for the station on a 24/7 basis. The thought of a College Radio Day without the WRAS we know and love participating is a sad thought indeed.

Sincerely,

The College Radio Day Cabinet
